DIY Dog Clothes

You love your dog, and you want to do everything for them — including dressing them up in clothes that show off their personality. Shopping for bandanas and other pet apparel is one option, but you can also get creative with the materials you have on hand.

You can make your furry friend look fashionable and keep them warm with a few simple steps by using baby clothes to create a DIY dog onesie.

MAKING A T-SHIRT FOR YOUR DOG

The first step in making your dog a custom T-shirt is to gather your materials. Start with a baby onesie. You’ll also need:

  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • A needle
  • A fabric pen

Slide the onesie over your dog’s head and pull their front legs through the sleeves to ensure it fits well. If you don’t have the right onesie size for your dog, you can take out some stitches on the sides and adjust accordingly. Making the onesie smaller will be easier than sizing it up, but most will have at least a little extra fabric for you to work with.

Leave the onesie on your dog and use the fabric pen to draw a line at the bottom where it should end — probably a few inches before the tail, but the exact length is up to you. After marking this edge, remove the onesie and cut along the line with scissors. Use a needle and thread to complete your pup’s new garment by hemming where you cut. You can speed up the project using a sewing machine, but it’s not a must.
